What you’ll discover
How will you respond to hypnosis?
The Trance Receptivity Index isn’t a pass-or-fail test. It’s a practical self-assessment that shows how you engage with the building blocks of hypnosis, so you and your hypnotherapist can choose the approach that suits you.
How you focus
How easily you concentrate and become absorbed, and how well you tune out distractions.
How you imagine and relax
Whether you think in pictures, sounds, words or sensations, and how readily your body lets go.
What will work for you
Which hypnosis and self-hypnosis techniques are likely to feel most natural, and what to tell a hypnotherapist.
Personalized results, not a form letter
Most online hypnosis tests give you a single score and a canned paragraph. Your interpretation is written for your exact profile across all seven areas, including which techniques are likely to suit you best and what to discuss with a hypnotherapist.
The test
Take the Trance Receptivity Index
15 questions, 5 minutes or less. Rate each statement based on your usual experiences, not how you think you should respond. There are no right or wrong answers, and your personalized interpretation appears as soon as you finish.
What it measures
The seven areas of trance receptivity
Your responses are scored into an overall result and a profile across seven areas. The profile is usually more useful than the single number.
Focused attention
How easily you concentrate on a voice, thought, image or sensation while distractions fade.
Absorption
How deeply you get lost in a book, music, a film or creative work.
Imagination and imagery
Whether you imagine in pictures, sounds, sensations, feelings, words or ideas.
Response to suggestion
Whether you respond best to direct instructions, indirect language, metaphor or guided exercises.
Physical relaxation
How easily you notice slower breathing, heaviness, warmth, lightness or stillness.
Inner awareness
How readily you notice your breathing, heartbeat, temperature or muscle tension.
Expectations and attitude
Your curiosity, confidence and any concerns about hypnosis, which shape how you experience a session.
A profile beats a score
One person visualizes easily but struggles to relax; another relaxes quickly but prefers words to pictures. Both can do well with the right approach.
Putting it to use
How to use your results
The most useful question isn’t “How hypnotizable am I?” It’s “Which approach will help me engage comfortably and effectively with hypnosis?”
Choose the right techniques
- Strong imagery may suit visualization and future rehearsal.
- Strong body awareness may suit breathing and progressive relaxation.
- A preference for structure may suit step-by-step inductions.
- Discomfort with sitting still may point to conversational or active methods.
Prepare for hypnotherapy
- Whether you prefer direct or indirect guidance
- Whether visual imagery works well for you
- Whether you notice physical sensations easily
- Whether you prefer a calm or active approach
- Any concerns you have about hypnosis

Myths vs. facts
What hypnosis does and doesn’t require
You need a vivid imagination
Vivid pictures aren’t required. People experience hypnosis through words, emotions, sounds, physical sensations or focused attention.
You have to be completely relaxed
Relaxation can help, but hypnosis can also involve concentration, mental rehearsal, conversation or even movement.
You lose control in hypnosis
In therapeutic hypnosis you can still think, speak, move, stop an exercise and reject suggestions that conflict with your values.
A low score means hypnosis won’t work
It may simply point to a different method, shorter exercises, clearer instructions or more practice. A high score doesn’t guarantee results either.
The research
What the research says about hypnotizability
Researchers have studied hypnotic responsiveness for decades, and a few findings are well established:
- Most people are in the middle. Responsiveness varies from person to person. A minority respond very strongly, a minority respond very little, and most people fall somewhere in between.
- It’s fairly stable. In a well-known study, people retested after 25 years scored remarkably similarly on a standard hypnotizability scale.
- Several factors play a part. Absorption, imagination and expectation are all linked to how people respond, though each only modestly. That’s why a profile across several areas is more useful than a single trait.
- Formal scales measure behavior. Laboratory tools such as the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale measure how people respond to a series of actual suggestions.
The Trance Receptivity Index is an educational self-assessment rather than a laboratory scale. It’s designed to help you understand your tendencies and choose an approach that fits you. To look more closely at how your attention works, including absorption, sensory filtering and time distortion, pair it with the Focus & Trance State Profile.
