What you’ll discover
Four skills, one honest look
Emotional intelligence is the ability to notice emotions, use them well, make sense of them and handle them. It is a set of skills, so it can grow. This test shows which of the four come easily and which could use some attention.
Four separate scores
Perceiving, using, understanding and managing emotions each get a score from 0 to 100, plus an overall score, so you see your pattern and not just one number.
Two ways of looking
Part one asks how you see yourself. Part two puts you in 12 real-life situations. Your write-up points out where the two pictures differ.
Quick and free
32 questions, about 8 minutes. No payment and no account, just your first name and honest answers.
Personalized results, not a form letter
Most emotional intelligence quizzes hand you a number and a generic paragraph. Your interpretation is written for your exact answers, including which skills stand out and where your self-ratings and your choices in the situations differ.
The test
Take the Emotional Intelligence Test
Part one has 20 statements about how you handle feelings. Part two has 12 short situations where you pick the response that fits you best. It takes about 8 minutes, there are no right or wrong answers, and your interpretation appears as soon as you finish.
What it measures
The four skills, in plain terms
The test follows a well-known research model of emotional intelligence by psychologists John Mayer and Peter Salovey. Each skill builds on the one before it.
Skill one
Perceiving
Noticing emotions in yourself and in other people, from a tense face to a flat tone of voice.
Skill two
Using
Letting emotions help you think, plan and get things done, such as using nerves as energy or calm for focus.
Skill three
Understanding
Knowing why emotions happen, how they blend and how they change over time.
Skill four
Managing
Handling your own feelings and other people’s in a way that fits the situation.
Your scores
How to read your results
Each skill is scored from 0 to 100 and placed in a band. The bands describe where you sit on this scale. They do not compare you with other people, and they are approximate, so a score near the edge of a band can be read either way.
The research
What the research says, and its limits
The four-branch model of emotional intelligence was introduced by psychologists John Mayer and Peter Salovey in the early 1990s and is widely used in the study of emotional skills. It treats emotions as information: noticing them, using them, understanding them and managing them.
- It relies on your honesty. Part one is self-report, so it reflects how you see yourself.
- The situations are simplified. Real life is messier than twelve short scenarios, and families, cultures and workplaces handle feelings in different ways, so a different choice is not automatically wrong.
- Scores can shift. Mood, stress and circumstances move answers a little, and the skills can be practiced at any age.
- The sub-scores are rougher. Each skill rests on eight questions, so treat them as hints, not measurements.

How it compares
Emotional intelligence vs. IQ and personality
Emotional intelligence is not the same thing as IQ, and it is not the same thing as personality. IQ is about reasoning and problem solving. Personality traits, such as those in the Big Five, describe how you tend to think, feel and act. Emotional intelligence is about skills: how well you notice, use, understand and manage emotions, and skills can be practiced.
Two people with the same personality can differ a lot here. One may be an easygoing person who reads a room well. Another may be just as easygoing and miss that a friend is upset. Your scores on this test can sit anywhere, whatever your personality or your IQ.
If you want a wider picture of yourself, you can pair this test with a personality assessment such as the Big Five or the Dark Triad Test.
FAQ
Emotional intelligence test: common questions
What is emotional intelligence?
It is the ability to notice, use, understand and manage emotions, your own and other people’s. Researchers often describe it as four connected skills.
How many questions are there, and how long does it take?
There are 32 questions, 20 statements and 12 situations, and it takes about 8 minutes.
What do I get at the end of the test?
Four scores from 0 to 100, an overall score, and an instant interpretation written for your exact answers, with ideas for building the skills that matter most to you.
Is this an IQ-style test with right answers?
No. It is a self-reflection tool. Part two asks which response fits you best, and the scoring reflects widely accepted views of effective emotional skills.
Can emotional intelligence improve?
Yes. These are skills, and noticing, naming and practicing them can change how you respond over time.
Is a high score always better?
Not always. A lower score means more room to grow, and a high score can have a cost too, such as over-managing your feelings or soaking up other people’s moods.
Can I use this test to rate someone else?
No. It is designed for self-reflection, and answering for another person will not give an accurate result.
Is this test free?
Yes. The Emotional Intelligence Test on Hypnotechs is completely free, including your personalized interpretation, and you do not need an account to take it.
