“So, can I be hypnotized?” That’s the question I hear most when people find out what I do. For most people, the answer is yes. This quiz collects the questions I often ask to get a sense of how easily that will happen for you. It’s a quick, informal guide, not a clinical test.

What makes the difference

What affects how easily you go into hypnosis

Being easy to hypnotize has nothing to do with being gullible or weak-willed. These are the things that tend to matter most.

Absorption

People who easily get lost in a book, a film or a daydream often find hypnosis comes naturally.

Trust and comfort

Feeling safe with your hypnotherapist and knowing what to expect makes it much easier to relax and let go.

Motivation and expectations

Wanting the result and expecting hypnosis to work both help. Hypnosis is something you do, not something done to you.

The right style of suggestion

Physical suggestibles respond best to direct suggestions; Analytical suggestibles to indirect ones. Find your style →

What the research says: responsiveness to hypnosis varies from person to person. In research settings, most people fall in the middle range, with smaller groups who respond very strongly or very little. A skilled hypnotherapist adapts the approach to you, which is why most people can benefit even without being “highly hypnotizable.”
