What you’ll discover
From the game table to everyday life
Classic alignment quizzes ask what your character would do on a quest. This one is all new: the questions, answers and results are built around how people really react to rules, pressure and each other.
Your place on the chart
Which of the nine alignments fits you best, and how close you sit to your neighbors.
Where you fall on both scales
How you balance order against freedom, and other people’s interests against your own.
What it looks like in real life
How your alignment tends to show up at work, with friends and family, and when nobody’s watching.
Personalized results, not a form letter
Most alignment quizzes give you a label and a fantasy character to match. Your interpretation is written for your exact answers, including where you fall on both scales and what your alignment means for the way you live, work and relate to people.

The alignment chart
Two questions, nine alignments
Alignment combines two separate questions. How you treat rules says nothing on its own about how you treat people, and that’s what makes the chart interesting.
Order vs. freedom: do you trust rules, structure and commitments, or your own judgment and independence?
Others vs. self: how much weight do you give other people’s well-being compared with your own interests?
History
Where the alignment chart comes from
Sorting people by moral character is ancient. The nine-box chart is much newer, and it came from fantasy.
- Ancient rootsPhilosophy and virtuePlato and Aristotle described virtue, vice and good character, and religious and legal traditions long separated the righteous from the corrupt.
- 1960sLaw versus ChaosFantasy author Michael Moorcock pitted cosmic forces of Law and Chaos against each other, and neither side was simply good or evil.
- 1970s onwardThe nine-box gridTabletop role-playing games added a Good versus Evil scale to Law versus Chaos, creating the nine alignments now famous in pop culture and memes.
The science
Is moral alignment real psychology?
Not exactly, and that’s okay. The alignment chart was invented for storytelling, not science. This test is designed for fun and self-reflection, not clinical measurement. Still, its two scales loosely echo real research on how people make moral choices:
- Moral Foundations Theory. Psychologists Jonathan Haidt and Jesse Graham found that people weigh different moral concerns, such as care, fairness, loyalty, authority and liberty. Someone who prizes authority and loyalty leans “lawful”; someone who prizes liberty leans “chaotic.”
- Personality traits. Rule-following relates to the Big Five trait of Conscientiousness, while caring about others relates to Agreeableness and to the trait researchers call Honesty-Humility.
- Context matters. Research on moral behavior consistently shows that situations, pressure and incentives shape what people actually do, so your alignment is a tendency, not a guarantee.

FAQ
Moral alignment test: common questions
What is a moral alignment test?
A moral alignment test places you on the classic nine-box alignment chart by measuring two things: how you relate to rules and order (Lawful to Chaotic) and how you weigh others’ well-being against your own (Good to Evil).
What are the nine alignments?
Lawful Good, Neutral Good, Chaotic Good, Lawful Neutral, True Neutral, Chaotic Neutral, Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil and Chaotic Evil.
How is this different from other alignment quizzes?
Most alignment quizzes are about fantasy characters. This one is 100% original: the questions, answers and results are designed around how people really react in everyday life.
Where does the alignment chart come from?
The Law versus Chaos idea comes from fantasy fiction, especially Michael Moorcock. Tabletop role-playing games of the 1970s added Good versus Evil, creating the nine-box grid.
How many questions are there, and how long does it take?
The test has 18 questions and takes less than 10 minutes.
What do I get at the end of the test?
Not a form letter. As soon as you finish, you get an instant interpretation written for your exact answers, including where you fall on both scales and what your alignment means in real life.
Does an “Evil” result mean I’m a bad person?
No. In real life it usually means you prioritize your own interests more than most. It’s a prompt for reflection, not a moral verdict.
Is True Neutral just indecisive?
Not at all. True Neutral often reflects a pragmatic, balanced approach that judges each situation on its own merits.
Is this a scientific test?
No. It’s designed for fun and self-reflection. Its two scales loosely echo research such as Moral Foundations Theory, but it isn’t a clinical or psychological measurement.
Is this test free?
Yes. The Moral Alignment Test is completely free, including your personalized interpretation, and you do not need an account to take it.
